Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-surgical treatment that involves the implantation of tiny dots of pigment into the scalp that replicate the look of hair follicles, which can help to disguise thinning hair or bald patches. This procedure can be used to achieve a variety of different looks, and can be tailored to meet the individual needs of each patient. If you are considering scalp micropigmentation, this article will provide you with all the information you need to make an informed decision.

SMP is a semi-permanent tattoo that can last anywhere from 1 to 5 years. The pigment is tailored to your natural hair color. SMP can be used to achieve a freshly shaven/stubble look, or it can be used to camouflage bald or thin areas. SMP can be combined with hair transplantation to improve the appearance of density. A common use as as follows: a hair transplant is performed to re-enforce the frontal hairline and temples, however, there may still be thinning at the vertex (back of the head near the hair whirl). While a transplant could be performed on the vertex, this requires a lot of hairs that may be better used elsewhere. In addition to medical therapy, SMP can be used to camouflage this thin area in the back while preserving hairs for the frontal and mid scalp.

SMP is a minimally invasive procedure that is typically performed in an outpatient setting. The scalp is numbed with a local anesthetic, and then pigment is implanted into the scalp using a needle. The needles used for SMP are much smaller than those used for traditional tattoos, and the treatment is considered to be relatively painless. Recovery time is typically quick, and most patients are able to return to their normal activities the same day.

There are a few potential risks associated with scalp micropigmentation, including: scalp infection, scalp inflammation, and allergic reaction to the pigment. These complications are rare, and can usually be resolved with medication or other treatment. Given the duration of SMP (1-5 years) you should ensure you want this look before having the procedure. If you decide to shave your head after SMP the dots will be visible. Laser tattoo removal can be performed but is painful, expensive, and requires multiple treatments.

If you are considering scalp micropigmentation, it is important to consult with a board certified dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon who has experience with this procedure. They will be able to assess your individual needs and determine if SMP is right for you.
