Low level laser therapy (LLLT)

Low level laser therapy (LLLT) is a treatment for hair loss that low energy lasers to stimulate the scalp and promote hair growth. There are many products on the market that offer LLLT, including laser caps and other devices. In this article, we will discuss how LLLT works and whether it is an effective treatment for hair loss.

LLLT is based on the principle of photo-biostimulation. When low level lasers are applied to the scalp, they can stimulate hair growth by increasing blood flow and oxygenation to the hair follicles. This increase in blood flow and oxygenation can promote the growth of new hair and improve the overall health of the scalp.

There is some evidence to suggest that LLLT is an effective treatment for hair loss. In a review article published in Lasers in Medical Science, "10 of 11 trials demonstrated significant improvement of androgenic alopecia in comparison to baseline or controls when treated with LLLT" (1). In one study published in Dermatologic Surgery, "After 24 weeks of treatment, the LLLT-treated scalp exhibited significantly greater hair coverage than the sham light-treated side (14.2% vs. 11.8%, p < .001). A significantly greater improvement from baseline in hair thickness, hair count, hair coverage, and IGA were also observed in the LLLT-treated side than in the sham light-treated side at the 12- and 24-week visits. No serious adverse events were observed" (2). While results are not dramatic, and likely not as beneficial as dutasteride, finasteride, or minoxidil, there does appear to be benefit. More research is needed to confirm the magnitude of benefit of LLLT for hair loss.

There are numerous brands and devices on the market. A key limitation of these devices is lack of comparative research. Which is more effective Capillus, iRestore, or LaserComb? The data is not clear. Furthermore, each brand has different models with different number of lasers, some of which also include LEDs. There are also different time intervals from 7 minutes daily to 20 minutes every other day.

If you are considering LLLT for hair loss, it is important to consult with a doctor or other healthcare provider to see if the treatment is right for you. LLLT is generally considered safe, but there are some risks associated with the treatment. These risks include scalp irritation and burns, as well as eye damage if the lasers are not used properly.

Overall, LLLT is a promising treatment for hair loss, but more research is needed to confirm its efficacy and the magnitude of benefit. If you are considering the treatment, be sure to consult with a healthcare provider to ensure it is right for you.
